Defaulting to a "Default_Wire_Type in Routing

Is it possible to have a catch-all wire type that all gauges are converted with?

Since lookups to the part table match what is in common between the connection list data (i.e. the .hrn) and the part table (e.g. wires_mm.ptb), then you could simply just leave the TYPE column out of the .ptb or name it to a something that wouldn’t match a field in the connection list.
