How to work with Clean_Borrow Licenses in Solid Edge

If you have trouble returning a borrowed license in Solid Edge, you need to use the "Clean_Borrow License" utility in order to check all licenses into the License Manager.  The workflow for doing this has changed since the new Siemens License Server was introduced for Solid Edge.  How to proceed here? 

Firstly, you need to open an Incident Report via Support Center and provide your current Floating License File to the Support Center.

A Clean_Borrow License file will be created by Siemens PLMS and sent to you.  Once you have received this, back up your current license file.  Next you start the Siemens License Server Installer and select the option "Add/Replace License File":

When prompted, browse to the Clean_Borrow License , the Installer does the rest for you by stopping the FlexLM Server, copying the new license to the ActiveLicense Directory of the Server, changing the port numbers and adjusting the vendor Line in the license file, creating Firewall Rules and restarting the License Server - there is no need to make changes to the license file manually.

Consequently, the borrowed licenses are all checked back into the FlexLM Server.

Now you need to start the Siemens License Server Installer again and replace the Clean_Borrow License with your original backed up license.

Having done this the FlexLM Server should be up and running again without a checked out license.

You can verify this by starting the lmtools.exe in the FlexLM Directory and on the Server Status Tab clicking on Perform Status Enquiry:

If you do not see any checked out and no "in use" Licenses, then the FlexLm Server is in its correct original state.

The last step you need to do is on the client machine which could not check back in the borrowed license.  Here you need to edit the registry 

and clear out all entries in the BORROW hive in the Windows REGISTRY:                                                            

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FLEXlm License Manager\Borrow         

This will clean everything on the client side.

You are done.
