Flange shortens when angle changed

Summary

Details

In this scenario, the user has an Ordered Solid Edge sheet metal part with a Tab feature.  They then add a Flange with an angle of 90 degrees and a length of 25mm.

If they modify the angle of the Flange to 175 degrees it does not appear to be correct - the length of the flange becomes much shorter.

Why is this?

Solution

In this instance, when the Flange was created, the user defined 'Outside Dimension' in the dialog box.

Therefore, the distance will be from the bottom of the flange to the theoretical intersection with the tab.

Consequently, when the angle is modified to 175 degrees, the extension of the inside flange edge to the theoretical intersection of the outside edge of the tab is much further back.  Therefore the physical edge of the flange is much shorter.

In this view the side of the flange has been sketched on and a line drawn tangential from the edge to the interesction with the top of the tab.

In order to maintain the length of the flange, when it is defined, you need to use the 'Inside Dimension' option

Consequently, the distance will be the theoretical intersection of the inside edge of the flange and the tab.

This is how it will look when the angle is modified to 175 degrees.
