This article applies to Siemens License Server (SLS) and Siemens Advanced Licensing Technology (SALT).

Here are some common questions and answers related to SALT.

Solution

General

Q:  Why are Siemens Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and Digital Industries Software (DISW) applications moving to SALT?

A:  Within Siemens EDA/DISW, there are almost 100 different license generators being used and maintaining them all gets more difficult every year.  This is not only difficult to maintain on the Siemens side but also difficult for customers to maintain in their runtime environments. Over the next few years, these will be replaced and all the Siemens EDA/DISW tools will eventually use the same system. This is an opportunity to re-engineer licensing using the best parts of each system, simplify license delivery and reduce administration efforts in customer environments.

Q:  What are some of the key changes related to SALT?

A:  SALT provides the following:

  • A new API that developers can use to check out both ugslmd and saltd licenses.
    • SALT includes the Siemens License Server (SLS) installer that installs three vendor daemons (mgcld, ugslmd and saltd) in a common location, imports their respective license files and starts their respective license managers.  This ensures that customers have a solution to manage their newly enabled SALT applications as well as legacy applications.
      • A single license environment variable, SALT_LICENSE_SERVER, for referencing license servers and license files.  However, for Solid Edge the environment Variable SE_LICENSE_SERVER will be used.

        License Delivery

Q:  When will I receive SALT licenses?

A:  You will receive SALT licenses when a product you own or purchase moves to SALT licensing and issues saltd licenses.  Each product is on its own timeline for moving to SALT.  Typically, a product line will move to SALT in its entirety and you will receive a completely new license file with saltd licenses.  In some cases, product lines may move to SALT in phases with some products delivering saltd licenses and others delivering ugslmd.  You will need to refer to the release notes for the products you are using to determine which licenses they require.  Beginning with Solid Edge 2020 SALT licenses can be used.

Q:  Where do I download SALT licenses?

A:  Your SALT licenses will appear in the license download area of Support Center as they become available for the products you are using.

        License Setup

Q:  I received saltd licenses.  Where do I download the Siemens License Server (SLS) and how do I install it?

A:  Please refer to KB Article  "Downloading and Installing the Siemens License Server (SLS)"

Q:  Where does SLS get installed?

A:  The default location on Windows is C:\Program Files\Siemens\License Server. On Linux it's /opt/Siemens/LicenseServer.

Q:  Where is the license file installed?

A: The default location on Windows is C:\ProgramData\Siemens\License Server\

Q:  I use an options file on my license server. How do I use one with SLS?

A:  The options file in SALT works as usual.  Specify the path to your options file with the OPTIONS= field on the DAEMON line in your license file. The Options file needs to have  the name saltd.opt

Q:  Can I still use SE_LICENSE_FILE as the environment variable ?

A:  Yes. The SALT_LICENSE_SERVER environment variable is recognized in the new variable in the future releases of Solid Edge.

        Q: Can I still use C:\flexlm\SElicense.dat?

A:  No.  The default FlexNet license file location will be ignored by products using SALT.
