Details

The Siemens License Server (SLS) records license check-in/out activity in the 'C:\ProgramData\Siemens\License Server\saltd.log' file (on Windows). The 'saltd.log' is recreated each time the license server (or 'Siemens License Server' service) is restarted. This means that any historical information about license usage/activity and any related errors are lost. For troubleshooting purposes, it can be useful to retain the 'saltd.log' and append new license activity to the existing file.

Solution

To append license server data to the existing 'saltd.log' file, a plus sign (+) can be added as the first character in the ‘Path to the debug log file’ field, on the 'Config Services' tab, within LMTOOLS:

Select ‘Save Service’ to ensure this change is retained.

The ‘lmtool.exe’ is located in 'C:\Program Files\Siemens\License Server'.

When the license server service is restarted, it will append new output to the existing ‘saltd.log’.

Note: Appending to the 'saltd.log' file, rather than recreating at each restart, can cause the file to become large over time, which could potentially affect performance, So, it will be necessary to monitor the files size and remove it from time to time.
