Summary

Details

Solid Edge data management (SEDM) files are not fully indexed, which may then cause downstream issues with related SEDM functionality such as "Where used", "Open Drawing", etc., in an SEDM server/client environment.

Solution

The root cause for this issue is that the Solid Edge data may not have been completely indexed by the underlying Microsoft Indexer process. This has been reported to Microsoft and we have engaged fully with Microsoft on this issue. Microsoft acknowledges that there is a change in behaviour in their indexing application which in turn impacts our SEDM application. We continue to remain engaged with Microsoft on this issue.

Pending any permanent solution being provided by Microsoft, we have identified and implemented a workaround in our Solid Edge software to overcome this Microsoft acknowledged issue. The remainder of this article fully documents step-by-step how to implement this workaround.

Note: As this is not a permanent solution, it is important to understand the limitations to this workaround. This is an optional switch that must be manually turned on for *all* users on *all* workstations that are creating and modifying Solid Edge files in an SEDM environment. If any one workstation in the SEDM environment does *not* have this workaround implemented, then the Microsoft indexing issue and downstream impact of that Microsoft indexing issue will be reintroduced.

Please keep this limitation in mind when rolling out new workstations, installing Solid Edge software, or resetting Solid Edge user preferences, etc.

This workaround has been introduced with Solid Edge 2022 maintenance pack 12 and later.

Workstation

The following instructions must be followed on each Solid Edge workstation.

1. Download the latest SE2022 maintenance pack:

https://support.sw.siemens.com/en-US/product/246738425/download/PL20200902110958364

2. Once the maintenance pack has downloaded, in Windows Explorer select the downloaded maintenance pack and right-click -> “Run as administrator”:

3. Select “Update” to begin installing the maintenance pack:

4. Wait on the maintenance pack to finish installing:

5. Once the maintenance pack has finished installing select “Finish” to complete and exit the maintenance pack update:

6. In the Windows Start menu begin typing “regedit”, select the “Registry Editor” application and then right-click -> “Run as administrator”:

7. In the Registry Editor browse to and locate the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Siemens\Solid Edge\Version 222\DEBUG” entry:

8. In the right-hand pane right-click and select “New” > “DWORD (32-bit) Value”:

9. Select the newly created “New Value #1”:

10. Change the name to “ENABLE_SEDM_INDEXER_ADDSTREAM”:

11. Double-click on “ENABLE_SEDM_INDEXER_ADDSTREAM” and select the “Value data” field:

12. Change the value from “0” to “1” and select “OK” to save the change:

13. With the registry key “ENABLE_SEDM_INDEXER_ADDSTREAM” created and its value correctly set to “1” exit the “Registry Editor” by selecting “File > “Exit”:

14. The workaround for the Microsoft indexer issue has now been implemented for the single user on the workstation. If there are additional users of the workstation this workaround must also be implemented for those additional users.

15. Once all users of the workstation have had the workaround implemented, the workaround must then be implemented on *all* remaining workstations and for *all* users creating and modifying Solid Edge data.

Server

Once the workaround is *fully* implemented to *all* Solid Edge clients, then the SEDM server *must* be reindexed. In order to ensure optimal reindexing and to minimize the impact on end users this reindex step should be carried out during off-hours e.g., in the evening or over the weekend.

1. Log into the SEDM Windows Server

2. In the Windows Start menu begin typing “Indexing Options” and select the “Indexing Options” application:

3. In the “Indexing Options” window select “Advanced”:

4. In the “Advanced Options” window select “Rebuild”:

5. In the displayed “Rebuild Index” select “OK” to start rebuilding the index:

Note: depending on the quantity of Solid Edge files to be reindexed this operation can take from several hours to several days to complete. While the index rebuild is in process SEDM should not used as the users will receive incomplete results when using SEDM.

6. In the “indexing Options” window the status of the indexing is including the number of items indexed is displayed:

7. Once the index rebuild is finished the indexing status will display the number of items indexed and that indexing is complete:

8. Select “Close” to exit the “Indexing Options”:

9. Once the indexing is fully completed, users can then start to use SEDM as normal.
