Some Tips to Troubleshoot Solid Edge Crashes/Aborts
SolutionThe best option to investigate a crash is to provide a reproducible test case (Solid Edge files + detailed steps that consistently lead to the abort). Include a movie to demonstrate the crash/abort if the steps are particularly complex.
Some recommendations when the crash/abort cannot be consistently reproduced:
1. Run Solid Edge in Safe mode to rule out add-on products. To test on safe mode, please open a Command Prompt and type “C:\Program Files\Siemens\Solid Edge Version xxx\Program\Edge.exe" /safe. Some add-on products known to cause aborts are MasterCAM and CAMWORKS. This usually indicates that the Add-in is not up-to-date with the current version of Solid Edge.
2. If there is a docking station connected? Then test with monitor connected directly to the computer.
3. If this is a laptop with dual graphics (i.e. NVIDIA + embedded Intel)? Consider disabling the embedded Intel via the BIOS.
4. Is this happening on more than one machine? Test to determine whether the crash is widespread or machine/user specific. Have other users on other machines test it. Also have a different user login to the original computer.
5. Check if the virus scanner has quarantined any of Solid Edge DLLs, DEX.
6. Cleanup the C:\Temp folder.
7. Backup your ‘Settings and Preferences’. Then open Solid Edge, go to Customize, and click on ‘Reset Docking Panes.’ See if that helps.
8. Printer drivers can be a source of crashes. Test with other printers if possible.
9. Please update the graphics driver. Graphics Drivers are a potential source of aborts.
10. 3D Devices drivers should be up-to-date.
11. Turn off Text Cursor indicator. This is a Windows setting (Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Text Cursor.)
12. If Grammarly is installed, then consider removing it for testing purposes.
13. Ensure that Solid Edge is running the most recent Maintenance Pack or Update. A fix for random crashes when the Windows option ‘Use text cursor indicator’ was turned on has been checked in the latest Solid Edge 2022 maintenance pack.
14. If the source of the crash is not identified, please provide the crashlogf.txt with matching crashlog.dmp located in %temp%. Add details of what the user was doing before the abort occurred. Include the Solid Edge files to try to replicate the crash. Also include the SESysInfo.log which you can get by running SESysInfo.exe from the Solid Edge Program folder while you have a Solid Edge 3D model open.
