In this example the user has a drawing on one layer in the 2D Model.  They create another layer - called 'Dimensions' and then put some dimensions on it.

They then hide the 'Dimensions' layer in the 2D Model View.

In Sheet 1 they see that 'Dimensions' appears as a layer.  It appears that it is possible to RMB and select 'Show Layer' however the dimensions will not be shown.

Why is this?

Solution

Firstly, think of the context where the geometry resides – in this example it is on the 2D Model.

A Sheet or drawing view within a working sheet is a display window back into the geometry of the 2D Model.   In this workflow, the ‘Dimensions’ layer in the 2D Model View is hidden – therefore that geometry is not displayed across corresponding sheet layers or into any Drawing View layers.

Layers are global to the file – the same layer appears across all sheets including the 2D Model.  You can create layers on either a Sheet or the 2D Model and those layers are seen across all sheets and the 2D Model View – it does not matter where a layer is created.

The layers directly under the Layers collector control the display of objects directly on that sheet. The layers here do not control the display of geometry that is directly on another sheet.

Layers are essentially display filters.  Geometry is owned by a sheet. So in this workflow the ‘Dimensions’ layer on the 2D Model view has been hidden and when the user tries to Show ‘Dimensions’ in the Sheet 1 they cannot – because that geometry is on the ‘Dimensions’ layer in the 2D Model.

However, if geometry is created on the ‘Dimensions’ layer of Sheet 1 – the circle and square shown here with ‘Dimensions’ layer active - under the layers collector of Sheet 1 then this geometry will be owned by Sheet 1 and accordingly the user could control the display of that geometry.

Geometry created on the Dimensions layer of Sheet 1

The user selects the 'Dimensions' layer on Sheet 1, does a RMB and hides the layer.

As a result the geometry on the 'Dimensions' layer owned by Sheet 1 is hidden.
