Clone Assembly with Interpart links retains all components

Summary

Details

During an assembly Clone operation, the Target of a WAVE link has the Cloning Action marked as 'Retain'. This causes other components to also be marked 'Retain' for their Cloning Action.

Solution

Edit a WAVE link Feature - 'Edit with Rollback'. There is an option, "Make Context-independent"...

WAVE link has "Make Context-independent = ON":
When the target of a WAVE link has its Cloning Action set to 'Retain', only the Source part of the WAVE link will also have the Cloning Action set to 'Retain'.

- However, if that Source part is a subassembly, that entire subassembly will be marked 'Retain'.

- Also, if the WAVE link Target is marked 'Retain', and the WAVE link Source is in a different subassembly, any subassemblies below that WAVE Source part could also be marked 'Retain'.

WAVE link has "Make Context-independent = OFF":
When the target of a WAVE link has its Cloning Action set to 'Retain', the entire Context Assembly of that WAVE link will also be marked 'Retain' (along with any of the Context Assembly's subassemblies and their structure). So if the Target of the WAVE link and the Source part of the WAVE link are in separate subassemblies, the Parent assembly of both those subassemblies and its entire structure will have the Cloning Action set to 'Retain'.
