Summary

Details

A carbide indexable tool is used to rough a slot. The Non Cutting Moves -> Engage -> Ramp on Shape option is used to ramp down around the profile of the slot until the floor is reached. When the tool cuts at depth it takes a final planar pass around the floor. During the final pass the tool cuts into the wall causing a collision with the shank of the indexable tool. How can this collision be avoided?

Solution

There are three settings in NX that control whether the Ramp on Shape moves are on or offset from the profile cut. These settings are Non Cutting Moves -> Engage -> Ramp on Shape -> Minimum Clearance and Cutcom -> Minimum Length and Minimum Angle. Disabling Cutcom and setting the Minimum Clearance to 0 produced a good tool path.
