What the dialog box is saying is happening? Is SE updating the file format to 2022? Or is it updating the links? If it is updating links upon open is there any way to turn that off? User would rather not update all links on file open.

Solution

This new 'progress' dialog in SE2022 is only reporting the actions SE goes through when opening an assembly. The 'loading' step is reporting as SE resolves file links and loads documents into memory. The second 'updating' step is where SE is reacting to changes in lower level components and has to check and update assemblies by solving and computing relationships, inter-part references etc. Once the assembly has been saved, the next open will be quicker since the checks will not yield any changes and will not need to update.

If the user is seeing long update times, I can suggest a couple of tools in Assembly.

1. Component Tracker

a. Runs a check on the assembly, letting the user load, update and save all the out-of-date documents in the structure.

b. Once updated and save via this tool, the next Open of the assembly should be quick on the 'updating' step.

2. If the user is working with very large assemblies or works collaboratively with others which makes the assemblies out of date, the user can turn on the "Limited Update" option if he/she doesn't care for SE to spend a lot of time updating. The user can then update periodically using the Component Tracker.

If neither of the above help, or if the user continues to see long update times when opening the assembly, I would recommend a PR to investigate any issues.

Hitting "Stop" on the dialog, essentially aborts loading of the assembly components and leaves them in a hidden state. Even that action requires SE to leave the assembly in a stable state, so could take a few minutes for large assemblies.

Of course there are various other reasons for slow assembly load such loading from a network share, slow disk access, large number of files etc. You will have to do some triaging to figure out what the issues are.

Just to emphasize, there is nothing new or different going on with the file open process; the dialog is just reporting on steps that have always been taken.
