Details

At times you may encounter a problem with importing dimensionally large STEP files, such as for buildings, plants, etc.  Due to limitations in Parasolid, these files may extend beyond the boundaries of those permitted by the kernel.  Consequently, Solid Edge is unable to import the files.

Solution

There is no perfect solution currently, but you may like to give the following steps a try.

The "trick" is to scale down the STEP file by factor 1000, and to replace "Millimeters" by "Micrometers", so every "Kilometer" will become a "Meter".

1) Open STEP file with an Editor which is capable of handling large files, such as Notepad++.
2) Search for ".MILLI." and replace it with ".MICRO".  Do this systematically for every occurrence.
3) Save.
4) Import the STEP files into Solid Edge.

Solid Edge recognizes units, and will read the STEP file as being a 1000 times smaller.

Whilst this method is not perfect, and the resulting model will be much smaller than in reality, the user will still be able to get an overview of the content, and may also take measurements or create drawings.

Please note, that this may NOT work in every case, and you may still encounter some errors.
