Reattaching retained dimensions requires the origin to be redefined.

Solution

If the Auto-Alignment is set to Off or Non-Associative when the dimension is created, the associative origin won't be created and thus won't cause a retained dimension to have the need for the origin to be redefined.  This is available on all dimension commands in the Origin group under Alignment.
