Summary

Details

In the following example, for security reasons, in the steps for the software installation, the company only wants to enables the ports necessary to work.  For this reason they would like to know the minimum range of ports that must be indicated in the  configuration "Client_orb.properties" file.

Normally the port numbers that are allocated are:

  • 54772
  • 19905
  • 49908

In this instance the customer defines additional ports within a range of 4000-6000.  The customer would like to know if there is a minimum range of working ports for the software?

Solution

The three identified ports mentioned are required but ElectricalManager opens additional ports after the initial connection is made via Port 19905.

These additional ports are randomly created by the communication layer (Corba) of Electrical Manager.

To that end, the client_orb.properties and manager_orb.properties need to have a range defined (min - max) so ElectricalManager will only allocate additional ports within the defined range.

Subsequently, these port ranges will be defined on the Client and Manager firewall settings.

The port range defined by the customer in this instance (4000 – 6000) is extremely generous for 1 user.  If you create a workgroup utilizing Solid Edge Electrical, it is possible to define a rule of 5 -7 ports per user.

This is an estimate that assumes that all SEWHD applications are being used by the user concurrently.
