This article will help you to understand the Data Preparation Tool delivered with Solid Edge Embedded Client. It will guide you through the data preparation process of native Solid Edge files for Teamcenter and explains how the tools are purposed to be used. This is not a guideline for massive bulk loading but will explain the basic steps.
Solution
Step 1 - Generate Import list
First step is to generate an import list. This will require Microsoft Excel and uses a template that will include several macros that you can use to prepare the data for Teamcenter. Start the Data Preparation Utility located in the Windows start menu in the Solid Edge folder
Select the folder that contains the Solid Edge data. The expectation is that this a flat folder with no duplicate file names. The result is an Excel sheet that you can use to prepare the data for Teamcenter. This sheet will open after generating the Import List.
Step 2 - Data Preparation
The Excel is to prepare the data for Teamcenter. The yellow columns are required fields for Teamcenter, all other fields are optional.
Required fields are:
Document Number (item_id) Revision (item_revsion_id) Project Name (object_name) Teamcenter Item Type (item_type)
You can enter existing Item IDs, enter new numbers or use the macro "Increment Doc Num" to generate numbers.
Note: The macro is not connected to Teamcenter, so choose a range that is available. Copy document number to file name and set file location to a new folder (not a sub-folder, see Step 4 - Fix broken links).
Step 3 – Modify properties
In this step we write the required properties to the Solid Edge files and copy and rename the files to the new location.
Step 4 – Fix broken links
Because files are renamed to the item_id we need to fix broken links. The first step is rename the original file location to force the broken links. In my example I renamed my source folder "Example" to "_Example" Check with Design Manager to verify if you have broken links: Now you can run "Rename and Fix Links"
Select the spreadsheet used for the data preparation and the new folder location Then run "Fix Broken links". When finished check with Design Manager so see if links are solved to the correct files:
Step 5 – Run Add to Teamcenter
Now your data is ready to import to Teamcenter. Start Add to Teamcenter. Select the folder with the prepared data. This will process the files in blocks. When finished the Items with Solid Edge datasets are created in Teamcenter.
Note:
This is a very simplified example to demonstrate all required steps for Data Preparation. However, this will help you to understand the process and how the Data Preparation Tools should be used. Mass bulk loads will require much time for data preparation, multiple revisions and duplicate file names will complicate the process.
