How to determine what STEP protocol or standard or format that Solid Edge creates STEP files in?

Solution

Open the STEP file generated from Solid Edge in to any text editor tool.

Scroll to the bottom of the file to a section called "APPLICATION_PROTOCOL_DEFINITION".  This field will tell you what application protocol/standard the STEP file was created with .e.g.

In the example above we can see that the STEP file is created to the "2010 Automotive Design International Standard" format.

Using this third-party reference we can further determine which STEP AP number this format correlates to e.g.

    Automotive Design = AP214

So in our STEP file example above we can determine that the STEP file generated from Solid Edge is to the "AP214 IS" application protocol/standard/format.
