Creating a standard Note object in manufacturing for use in an engraving operation puts the text in the XY plane. Can notes be created on other faces/planes of the part?
Solution
The Note function in CAM is inherited from the general drafting note in NX, and it is based on the creating 2D geometry in the XY plane of the WCS (the XC-YC plane). The Note function adds simple text and then the Planar Text operation is used to create engraving tool path for those characters. If you want to put a note on some face that is not in the default XY plane, you first have to orient the WCS to suit that face before creating the note.
If the WCS is not visible, turn it on by using Menu; Format; WCS; Display. You will see the XC-YC-ZC coordinate system on the screen:
Position the WCS to create a correct plane for the new text. In this case, we will put some engraving on the slanted front face of the part. There are lots of ways to accomplish this, but for the sake of example, we will use dynamic positioning. Go to Menu; Format; WCS; Dynamics to enable positioning handles: In this case, we will put the origin at the bottom left corner of the face and orient X along the long edge so the text aligns with the length of the face. Note that ZC points out normal to the face so the XC-YC plane of this WCS orientation matches the face where the text will be placed: Middle mouse button to accept this and place the WCS:
Now use Menu; Insert; Note to create the note text. The text is in the correct XC-YC plane and we can pick the angled face as a location for the text:
Now we can create the Planar Text operation to machine the text. The note is chosen as usual, the floor plane is selected as the face of the part, and the tool axis is defined to be normal to that floor face. The resulting path engraves this text on the proper angle for this face of the part: If any other notes need to be created on other faces/planes, reposition and reorient the WCS as needed before creating each of those so they are all placed correctly on the part.
