Is there any limitation in usage of Asterisk character in Item ID?
Teamcenter RAC allows to create multiple items with Asterisk character in Item ID

Duplication Steps
1. Create a new Item in NX Manager with item ID PL89*BLR115*ASM
2. Create 2nd Item with Item ID PL89*BLR283ASM
     Error : File already exist
3.  From Teamcenter RAC, create 2nd Item with Item ID PL89*BLR283ASM
4. Select PL89*BLR283ASM/A and launch NX.
5. Once the Item opens in NX, perform Save operation
  The following errors Occurred
Error: Teamcenter error Multiple items were found for the given values . :PL89*BLR283ASM/A

Solution

While creating or saving NX searches for the item id, if found NX gives error.
In NX asterisk is used for search operation.
In this case while creating or saving NX ignores the Item id after asterisk and searches for only  PL89*, since already there is a item is which starts with  PL89* hence the error occurs.

The following characters should not be used for the Number when you are creating a new part, assembly, drawing, and so on. The Number corresponds to the Item ID in Teamcenter Integration:

   (") double quote
   (*) asterisk
   (/) slash
   (\) backslash
   (:) colon
   (<) less than
   (>) greater than
   (`) back tic
   (|) vertical bar
   (~) tilde
