When performing replacement operation (using Replacement Assistant) and reparenting WAVE links in assemblies, sometimes not all features will update. What workflow will help minimize the mapping and repair work for complex models?

Solution

Suggested Workflow for NX Replacement Assistant

Following are some suggested workflow changes which can ensure robustness of model update and thumb rules for leveraging the NX Replacement Assistant enhancements and UI capabilities effectively:

1 - Note the sheet normal of the Linked / Extract Body or Face (in WAVE Geometry Linker edit dialog). In case of solids, this step is not necessary.

2 - On selecting the replacement body, verify that the normal of the replacement aligns correctly with the normal of the original Linked/Extract feature's output in the left pane of the dual layout.

3 - On entering Replacement Assistant, change 'Specific Objects' Type filter to 'Objects with Dependents' and execute the 'Find Objects with Dependents' query. This query will attempt to query detailed feature usage of each entity which is the output of the Linked / Extract feature being edited. The query works best if all parts in the assembly or WAVE hierarchy are fully loaded in the session.

4 - Manually and carefully map all the edges and faces reported as dependents. Use the 'Where Referenced' query on the important objects to get detailed feature usage information for the reported entities. On selecting the edge / face in the Important Objects list, they are automatically selected and added to a new match or the match being edited.

5 - Ensure that the edge which is reported as the seed of any selection intent rule is the first one selected in the match. This can be verified by an asterisk besides the on-screen edge number. If the edge has the asterisk, then it is the first edge in the many -> 1 match or 1 -> many.

6 - In most case, nothing else needs to be mapped for the dependent features to update correctly.

7 - Use 'Infer from Accepted' automatic matching method to infer matches for topological neighbors of the entities already in accepted matches. This newly added automatic matching mechanism will attempt to match entities by topological proximity and works best with 1 - 1 matches.

8 - Use 'Geometric Matching' automatic matching method to match old and replacement entities geometrically. This mechanism works best if the old and the replacement entities are located at the same position in absolute coordinates.

9 - In case of out-of-date links, the 'Matches' list will be populated with system inferred maps when entering Replacement Assistant dialog. Use 'Review Tentative Matches' mode (Current Activity) to review and accept each match. In this mode, the MB2 default action is set to 'Accept Match' button. Secondly, on 'accepting' a tentative match, the next tentative match will be automatically selected in the list and highlighted in the graphics screen.
