Summary
Details
In Solid Edge Wiring and Harness Design (SEWHD), in Project > Preferences > General, we have the option to choose if we want to enable or disable the repetition of names of the pins (Disallow pin/port duplication within a design).
Despite changing this option, it does not appear to have any effect. The software does not let me repeat the pin names. In this case I need to repeat the pin names. How to accomplish this?
Solution
We will try to explain the intention of this feature :
For example, let's say I have a device where I need to show the "same" pin twice so the connectivity going to that pin is not cluttered.
I start off by adding the device to the diagram
If I double click on the 'Complex Processor' device highlighted in blue above, you will get this dialogue box shown below
After multiple selecting the PIN1 and PIN2, select the Place button
Draw another instance of the device and locate the second instance of the pins
One application for doing this could be something like this, where depending on a configuration of the wiring:
PIN1 could have Wire1 attached or Wire4 attached
PIN2 could have Wire2 attached or Wire5 attached
Additionally, Wire1 and Wire2 could have a 'harness' attribute of W100. As compared to Wire4 and Wire5 which could have a 'harness' attribute of W200
Now, back to your original question, having 2 different pins with the same name is not supported. In contrast, showing the same pin multiple times is supported.
If we take this example and use the built in reports, it becomes clear that we do not have a quantity of two pins named PIN1 and PIN2.
Workflow > Reports > Pin List
But we can show that there are 2 wires connected to PIN1 and 2 wires connected to PIN2
Workflow > Reports > Design Wire List
If you want two (physical) pins to have the same (similar name) then your naming convention will have to infer it with naming for example the first pin 13 and second pin 13'. Other customers use a pin naming convention of pin_name-number. For instance:
GND-1 GND-2 +5V-1 +5V-2 NC1 NC2
