Details

In a client - server configuration for Solid Edge Built-in Data Management (SEDM) the user is unable to select an index location in the Indexing options utility.  The Indexed Locations are empty:

Solution

In this instance, the user is running the Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) role on their server.  This role has a known limitation in that it will disable Windows search.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/troubleshoot/windows-server/shell-experience/windows-search-is-disabled-by-default

By default, the Windows Search service is set to Disabled in Windows Server 2016.  This is because indexing of the volumes can cause problems in certain scenarios, such as with Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) and in running Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) with multiple simultaneous sessions.

Currently there is no option to enable Windows search with the RDSH role enabled.  Since Windows search is required to run SEDM this configuration is not supported.
