How can you replace a component with an empty dataset in Managed NX?

Solution

One way to do this is to replace the Named References of the dataset under the item revision.  In the example below, I will replace the component "top".
 
 




Assuming you have already performed a Save As --> New Revision, locate the the dataset under the Item Revision.  In the image below, top has been revised to B.



 
Check the dataset out, first.  Then, right-click on the dataset --> Named References.






Highlight the UGPART entry that contains the name of the component and select the Delete button:








Now select the Upload button. This will open a dialog that will allow you to select any part file outside of Teamcenter. In the image below, I am selecting a part that is located on a mapped drive. Select the Upload button.





Close the dialog and check the dataset back in to Teamcenter. 
In NX, set your Assembly Load Options to Allow Replacement and OK:





Open the assembly and the OK the warning:





Not the top of the bench has been replaced by a block:
