How do you create a simple cantilever model in Solid Edge Simulation using Beam Elements?

Solution

One option to work with a beam like structure in Solid Edge Simulation is to create the Simulation Study in the Frame environment.  A classical example is a cantilever beam with a point load at the end.  The general workflow is to create a part with the geometry which can be applied in the frame environment, create the Simulation Study while in the Frame environment, proceed with the finite element model, solve and then examine the results.  A standard method to view beam combined stresses is using a 'Beam Cross Section' diagram.

An example follows:

1.      Create a part with a sketch representing the cross section of interest and select the material.

2.      Create an assembly with a Sketch for use in the Frame environment.

3.      Go into the Frame environment ('Tools -> Frame').

4.      Click on the 'Frame' command, click OK, click on 'Select cross section component' from the command bar, browse to the part created previously, click on the sketch in the view, accept it, click on 'Finish', and dismiss the 'Frame Options' dialog.

5.      Select the frame from the Assembly Pathfinder.  Click on 'Edit Cross Sections'.  Click on the 'Orientation' box and enter 90.  Then click 'Finish'.

6.      Click on the 'Simulation' tab.

7.      Create a 'New Study'.

8.      Select the 'Define' command, click on the frame and accept it.

9.      Select 'Constraints -> Fixed'.  Select 'Node' from the selection type in the command bar, click on the origin of the beam and right mouse button to accept it.

10.      Select 'Structural Loads -> Force', select 'Node' from the selection type list, click on the opposite side of the line, drag the origin of the Steering Wheel to the endpoint of the line and ensure that the principal axis of the Steering Wheel points in the -Z direction.  Enter a value of 1000 N.

11.      Click on 'Mesh-> Mesh & Solve'.

12.      Click on the 'Display Option', unckeck 'Beam Cross Section' and click on the 'Beam Diagram' checkbox.
