When installing NX on a client workstation, the installer prompts for the license server details in the form of 'network_port@license_server_hostname', for example, 29000@lic_serv1. The installation process then checks the connection to the license server before proceeding. If however the license server is not reachable then the message "Connection to license server machine failed" is displayed and the NX installation cannot progress.
(There can be several reasons why the client cannot reach the license server, and if it's network issue it will need to be resolved, but the immediate objective is to complete the NX installation on the client workstation.)
Note: The NX installer verifies the network connection to the license server using the Windows 'ping' command, however, in some customer environments this command may be disabled, resulting in the message shown above.
SolutionTo allow the NX installation to proceed, the license server details can be entered as 29000@LocalHost . When this value is used it is not validated and therefore the installation can progress.
When the NX installation is complete, the SPLM_LICENSE_SERVER system environment variable can be edited to change its value from 29000@LocalHost to reflect the license server's actual hostname (or IP address).
Note: If the failure to connect to the license server is the result of a slow network connection, the time allowed for NX to make the initial connection can be increased by creating the system environment variable FLEXLM_TIMEOUT and settings it to 5000000 , this value (in milliseconds) will increase the connection time limit to 5 seconds.
