NX NX is slow to start when there is no internet connection available for the machine

When running NX on a machine which does not have an internet connection NX is taking several minutes to start. How can the start up time be improved?

Solution

This is a known problem with the NX1872 series of NX (e.g. NX1876, NX1888, NX1892). NX incorrectly pauses for a period of time while it tries to establish a connection to the NX Welcome page and update servers.
This issue is fixed in the NX1899 series and later.
The problem can be avoided in NX1872 series by doing the following:

1) Turning off the automatic update functionality in the customer defaults

2) Setting the environment variable UGII_BACKGROUND_URL=none

Please note, in NX1892 and later only step 2 will be required to avoid the issue.
