How to change the displayed name of the part in the current window tab in NX12 and higher.

Solution

The tab information is controlled by Assembly Preferences.
1. In the Menu, select 'Preferences-->Assemblies'.
2. Toggle the 'Descriptive Part Name Style' to the desired option.
File Name = The full filename of the part.
Description = The Description of the part (which in Managed NX is typically the ItemID/Rev).
Specified Attribute = Allows a part attribute value to be specified.
3. OK the dialog.

To set something custom for the tab, you can use the 'Description' option above and then edit the part header.
1. Make the part the work part.
2. Select 'File-->Utilities-->Edit Work Part Header'.
3. Enter a custom Description. This will appear on the tab.
4. OK the Edit Part File Header dialog.

This is also in Customer Defaults under 'Assemblies-->General-->Miscellaneous (tab)'.
This Customer Default can be set to one of the following:
  • $FILENAME
  • $DESCRIPTION
  • Or set to be the attribute needed.
For example, if the parts have a custom attribute titled, "Color", this can be set to: $COLOR
