Summary

Details

When editing Solid Edge files stored on the network suddenly the user can no longer save the file back to the network, a "File Save Conflicts" error is displayed, and the user can only save a local copy of the file.

Why is this error occurring?

Solution

This error message indicates that the timestamp of the file on disk on the server is newer than the timestamp of the same file opened into the user's Solid Edge session memory.

We are not familiar with each customer's specific network environment involved so cannot explicitly answer why a user would be receiving this message.

What happens is that the user opens a file in Solid Edge for edit with a timestamp at the time of opening the file for edit being recorded by the user's Solid Edge session e.g. 10:00.  Then for whatever unknown reason, the file on the server has then been modified/updated with a newer timestamp e.g. 12:00.  When the user then goes to save the file, the user's Solid Edge session will detect that the file on the server has a newer timestamp than the timestamp of the file that was opened by the user and will then throw this error message.

However, what caused the timestamp on the server to be newer than the timestamp for the user is something that we cannot determine.

Here is a small list of potential causes...

  • If the customer is using a Distributed File System (DFS) configuration on their file server.
  • Virus scanning touching the file.
  • File access permissions/security settings changed.
  • Network disconnect and then a different user accessing the file at later time.
  • Cloud file syncing services.
  • Downstream processes touching the file e.g. a custom application to do some downstream process on the file such as an automatic print routine.
  • The operating system lock on the file being manually removed by another user and then touching the file.
However, there are many other potential reasons for the timestamp on the server being newer than the timestamp of the file opened by the user in their session.  We simply cannot identify this.  You will need to work with your IT support team to determine what potentially could have occurred in your environment during this time window that may have caused the file on the server to be updated with a newer timestamp.
