Is it possible to make modifications to released Solid Edge files without having to create a new revision of the file?
Once a file is marked as released it is then not possible make any modifications to that file.
Once a file is released then the standard workflow should be to create a new revision of the that file to then make the desired changes. This is the accepted practice for all drafting standards. Additionally, in some industries such as medical and aerospace, it may be a legal requirement to not change data once the file has been released.
Therefore, if the customer has omitted information from a released file then theoretically the customer should create a new revision to add that missing information. After all, it is possible that in the process of making what appears to be a simple change that then something inadvertently changes without the user being aware of it.
However, it is also understood that sometimes a customer may not want a new revision for a simple clerical type error. We do provide a mechanism to allow the modification of released files. However, this method should not be enabled by default and should be the exception not the norm.
In the registry create the following DWORD (32-bit) value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Siemens\Solid Edge\Version 220\DEBUG\DOCMGMT_OVERRIDESTATUSCHECKFORFILEACCESS
Set this value to = 1.
Now, whenever you open a Released status file in Solid Edge, in the Read-Only Assistant window select "Request Check Out" and the file will immediately become modifiable without having to change the file status or creating a new revision:
If this method is to be used then a suggestion would be to consider implementing some sort of utility to quickly toggle this registry switch on and off as needed.
