PMI in drafting, why does the text sometimes change when view scale is changed?

Summary

Details

There are 3 options when adding PMI data from a model in modeling to drafing views in drafting, "From Model View", "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)" and "Aligned to Drawing (Entire Part)".

Why are there three options, what are the difference?

When you change view scale on a view in drafting with inherited PMI of type "From Model View", the size of the dimension text changes. This does not seem to happen when dealing with a view of type "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)", why is this?

Solution

The difference between the 3 different types of inherit PMI is within which PMI objects will occur in the drafting view.
- "From Model View" means that all PMI objects belonging to the corresponding model view, will, regardless of orientation, occur in the drafting view.
- "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)" means that only PMI objects that in the modeling view have an orientation that aligns with the drafting view will show.
- "Aligned to Drawing (Entire Part)" does the same as the one above but is not limited to just objects within the model view at hand, all PMI objects in the model part which have annotation planes parallel to the drawing sheet will be included.
So, the result from using "From Model View" or "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)" can be the same or vastly different, depending on the orientation of the PMI objects in the model view.

About dimension text changing size with view scale modifications.
It is not as much a difference between "From Model View" and "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)", as the fact that you enabled the option "Show PMI on Drawing", that makes the difference in behavior.

PMI objects in "From Model View" views always belong to the drawing view instead on the drawing sheet as dimensions etc. created in drafting commonly does.
You can see this if you make the view boundary visible. The PMI dimensions are inside your "From Model View" view, which means that when the scale of the view is changed the dimension text is also subject to the change.
When using the "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)" type view you have the option to enable "Show PMI on Drawing", which means that PMI dimension is not inside the view boundary and they do not belong to the view, but to the drawing sheet. This means that any change to the view scale have no influence on the dimension objects.

If you were to create a "Aligned to Drawing (View Only)" type view and NOT enable "Show PMI on Drawing", the dimensions would change with the scale as observed with the "From Model View" view.
