User cannot copy and paste a value from a Microsoft Excel file in to the Solid Edge Variable Table when that Excel file is stored in a OneDrive folder location:
If the user pauses OneDrive syncing then the link can be pasted. How to work around this so that the value from the Excel file can still be copy and pasted as a link in to Solid Edge without having to pause the OneDrive syncing?
Solution
OneDrive with Microsoft Office applications is designed by default to allow multiple users to collaborate *
AND* edit on a single shared Office file stored within OneDrive. Because of this online collaborative editing functionality for Office files, it is not possible for another application e.g. Solid Edge to get single user write access to the Excel file to then allow the OLE link to be created within Solid Edge. This is why the Paste Link is greyed out in Solid Edge – Microsoft Office does not allow linking to collaboratively edited Office files.
However, it is possible to work around this by making a change to the OneDrive settings...
Right-click on the OneDrive icon located in the Notification area of the Windows Taskbar and select More... -> Settings:
In the OneDrive settings window select the Office tab:
Deselect or uncheck the "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open" and OK the change:
Reopen your Excel file stored in OneDrive and you will now be able to paste links to the Solid Edge variables:
