An operation is created to mill a profile on a part. In portions of that path the tool experiences a much heavier cut load than other areas. How does the Optimize Feed Rate utility work to reduce the feed rate when this occurs?

Solution

The NX CAM Optimized Feed Rate utility is used to adjust the feed rates for each cutter move based on how much material the tool is removing. This routine will look at each move and will either slow the tool down or will speed it up based on the cut volume. This volume is determined by monitoring how much of the IPW is being removed by the tool. The intent of this utility is to help reduce the cutting time while at the same time improve the tool life.

From the Feed and Speeds menu the Optimize Feed Rate When Generating option is enabled. When done new feed rate options will be displayed.

The optimal amount of material to be removed is set on the Target Material Removal Rate pane. This volume is calculated by multiplying the Feed Rate, times the Nominal Cut Width and times the Nominal Cut Depth. The intended action is to keep the cut volume as close to the target removal rate as possible by adjusting the feed rate.

The amount that the feed rate can change is determined by the Minimum Feed and the Maximum Feed values that are set. During a long cut move it is possible that the cut volume could increase or decrease for only a part of that move. When this occurs, the cut is divided into multiple moves and the feed rate is adjusted for each segment. The Length Interval setting specifies the minimum length of each segmented cut.

When the path is generated the feed rate might look something the picture below.
