Summary

Details

Get message "Unable to calculate with self-intersecting object", whilst saving a part.

When I OK the message, the save operation is completed.

What does this message mean?

Solution

This message was introduced in NX 1847. It indicates that the solid body you are trying to do a weight calculation on contains self-intersecting surfaces. And for that reason NX will not perform any weight calculation.
When there are self-intersecting surfaces on a solid body a weight calculation might take very long time or/and the result may be incorrect.

When the message, "Unable to calculate with self-intersecting object", occur whilst saving a part you have save option "Generate Weight Data" enabled. The message can also occur, when a self-intersection condition is present, when you do an advanced weight management calculation or when you press "Update Weight Data Now" button under component properties menu.
Please note: The message will only occur if you edited the model since the last save.

To trace down the self-intersection, so you can address the issue, you can use the Examine Geometry function and select the entire geometry to examine with a selection rectangle. (Do not just pick the solid body)
