NX Slowing the Spindle Speed when Moving between Holes in a Deep Drill Cycle

Summary

Details

A gun drill is used to drill very deep holes. Because of the length of this drill the spindle speed must be slowed down whenever the drill is not in a hole to prevent the drill from whipping. How can an NX Hole Making operation be set up to add this slow spindle speed during the re-position moves?

Solution

1. Create a  Deep Hole Drilling operation.

2. Notice that the Motion Output  is set to Single Moves and the Cycle to Deep Drilling.

3. Make certain that the Feature Geometry -> Control Point is set to Machining Feature. When the hole is selected in the List pane the hole CSYS will be positioned at the top of the hole. This is necessary in order to get the correct output.

4. On the Feeds & Speeds menu set the Engage Feed Rate and the Spindle Speed to some value. The Engage Feed Rate controls how fast the long tool enters the pilot hole.

5. Edit the Cycle and set the Engage and Retract Spindle Speed to a small value.

6. Set the Strategy -> Extend Path values to look something like the picture below.

7. The posted output might look like the G-code seen below. Notice that the drill runs in reverse at a slow RPM while feeding into the pilot hole. At this point the spindle speed is reversed and increased to cut the part. At the bottom of the hole the spindle is again reduced and reversed and retracts out of the hole. The second hole is then drilled.
