NX for Manufacturing
Summary
Details
A single CAM operation is selected and Verify is run. The operation comes after a number of other operations in the program. When 3D Dynamic is selected and Play is pressed it takes a good length of time before the In Process Workpiece (IPW) is displayed and the tool starts cutting. When the IPW column is displayed it can be seen that all operations have a black X indicating that the operation IPW has not been saved with the CAM part file.
Solution
Starting in NX12 there was a new setting added in Customer Defaults -> Manufacturing -> Operation -> Tool Path called Automatically Generate IPW in Background. This option will cause NX to create and then save an IPW with every operation showing what the workpiece would look like after the tool path has been run. This IPW is created by running a background process utilizing the multiple processor cores. Notice the hour glass and the green check-mark in the picture below showing this being done automatically.
When this IPW has been saved the operations will indicate that the IPW is up to date by displaying a green check mark in the IPW column. When present Verify can be run much quicker on a single operation because the IPW does not need to be recreated for all previous operations but can instead be retrieved from memory. This does make the file grow in size because the IPW is being stored internally. When the program has been completed the user could select all operations and press MB3 -> Workpiece -> Delete 3D to save disc space.
