How to project a decal or a curve onto a surface without distortion.
This will ensure the arc length of the projected curve is the same as the arc
length of the original curve.

Solution

 1. Select 'Insert-->Curves-->Curves From Curves-->Project'.
2. Expand the Projection Direction group in the dialog.
3. Set 'Direction' to 'Along Vector'.
4. Select a vector arrow from the work area.
 NOTE: Select 'Reverse Direction' if needed to get the vector to point
 to the curved surface.
5. Set 'Project Option' to 'Equal Arc Length'.
6. Select a point on the original curve to 'Specify XY Origin'.
7. Select a vector arrow from the work area to 'Specify X Direction'.
8. Under the Curves or Points to Project group, select the original
 curves for projection.
9. Under the Objects to Project To group, select the face to project onto.
10. OK the Project Curve dialog.

The arc lengths can be confirmed by using 'Analysis-->Measure Length' and
selecting the original and the projected curve(s) for comparison.
