---------------
Changes made in Customer Defaults -> Visualization -> Background Color, will only be honored when selecting the Blank template.
How can I get this when selecting the Modeling template?

Solution

 1 - Create a new part.

2 - Select File -> Preferences -> Background

3 - Select Plain both for Shaded and Wireframe Views.

4 - Click on the "color" box on the right side of Plain Color

5 - Here you can select the color you want as background. On the lower right side of the window you will find Red, Green and Blue with a value in each field. These are the values you enter in "Customer Defaults > Visualization > Background Color".
The values are from 0-255 where Red=0, Green=0 and Blue=255 gives the clearest blue color. If you would like a brighter blue you can use R=0, G=128 and B=255.

6 - Press OK twice. The background will now have the color you selected.

7 - Open the Background Color in Customer Defaults and make the changes you
would like (see above).

8 - When you open a New part in NX you usually select a "Model" template. So
to make your background color appear when you create a new part, this template
has to be changed. Otherwise the new color will only appear if you select
Blank.

9 - Make a backup copy of
%UGII_BASE_DIR%\UGII\templates\model-plain-1-mm-template.prt

10 - Open the original file in NX and do the steps 2-7 (see above).

11 - File -> Save.

12 - Close NX and start NX again. The background should now be in your
selected color when you create a new part file using the Model template.
