Currently, all users are using the 'Classic Layout', but some users want to
use the 'Ribbon Bar'. How can this option be set individually so users can
choose their own User Interface Environment?

Solution

The Customer Default 'User Interface Environment' controls whether there is a
user preference. If a site has this set to either 'Classic Toolbars Only' or
'Ribbon Bar Only', then users are unable to set this option individually in
the user preferences. This option in Customer Defaults needs to be set to 'User
Preference' in order for the option to appear in the User Interface Preferences
and allow users to set this individually.

In order for users to have this preference available, please follow these
instructions:
1. In Customer Defaults, expand 'Gateway' and highlight 'User Interface'.
2. Select the 'Layout' tab.
3. Set the User Interface Environment option to 'User Preference'.
4. OK the Customer Defaults dialog.
5. Re-start NX.

When 'User Preference' is set, then users can choose their layout in
Preferences.
1. Select 'Preferences-->User Interface'.
2. Select the 'Layout' tab.
3. Set the User Interface Environment to the preferred option,
 'Ribbon Bar' or 'Class Toolbars'.
4. OK the User Interface Preferences.
