Details
When adding a bilateral tolerance to a drafting dimension, the plus (+) and
minus (-) signs and the decimal places in the tolerance values do not line up
from the top line to the bottom line.
For example, the tolerance dimensions will display similar to the following:
+0.001
-0.001
Instead the text characters should line up from the top line to the bottom line
and display as:
+0.001
-0.001
Solution
The issue is the text font being used for the dimension. The text font most
likely uses a technique called kerning. Kerning reduces the gap between
adjacent pairs of characters. The Arial font will use kerning which reduces the
gap between the characters and makes it appear as though the bottom tolerance
value is more left justified. Not all fonts have kerning
capability. For example the blockfont will not use kerning. Many other fonts
also do not use kerning. The different fonts can be applied to the tolerance
text to see which ones do not use kerning.
There are two options to resolve the issue.
Option #1 (Change the text font of the dimension tolerance):
1. Double-click the dimension to edit it.
2. Select the 'Dimension Style' icon from the Edit Dimension toolbar.
3. Select the 'Lettering' tab.
4. Select the 'Tolerance' Lettering Type.
5. Change the text font to a font that does not use kerning.
For example, change the text font to "blockfont".
6. OK the Dimension Style dialog.
NOTE: When adjusting the text font for the tolerance, the text font for the
dimension and appended text may need to be modified to match. On the
'Lettering' tab of the Dimension Style dialog, the text font can be modified
for the dimension and appended text by changing the Lettering Type to
'Dimension' or 'Appended' to change the font for these as well.
Option #2 (Add the tolerance as appended text):
1. Double-click the dimension to edit it.
2. Change the tolerance option to 'None'.
3. Select the 'Text Editor' icon from the Edit Dimension toolbar.
4. Set the Appended Text option to 'After'.
5. Select the 'Drafting Symbols' tab.
6. Enter the tolerance needed on the two lines.
For example:
+0.001
-0.001
6. Select the 'Two Lines of Text' button.
7. The format for the appended text will appear in the
Appended Text window portion of the dialog.
For example: <T+0.001!-0.001>
8. If the bottom text needs to be spaced over, add a space to the format.
For example: <T+0.001! -0.001>
9. OK the Text Editor dialog.
Notes and References
ER #6918898 has been submitted requesting the ability to turn off kerning in
dimensions for those text fonts that do use kerning.
