Solution

In the context of the '.afm' or the '.sim' file (as required), set the following option:

Menu

Preferences

Model Display

Element (tab)

Display, Color Basis = FEM Mesh Color

With this option defined, the colour of a mesh in the context of a '.afm' file or '.sim' file will be consistent with the colour of that same mesh in the context of the associated '.fem' file.
