Summary

Details

The DOF (Degree-of-Freedom) on the line in sketcher is inconsistently reported in Relations Browser

(1) In a sketch, turn off Auto Dimension
(2) Create a vertical line starting from sketch origin and end anywhere
(3) The status line will show the sketch needs 1 constraint
(4) From within the sketch, run Relations Browser
The browser states the curve is fully constrained - does the curve need 1 constraint or is it fully constrained, which is accurate?

Solution

When creating a line in sketch (just a stand-alone line with no auto-dimension or constraints), there will be 4 DOF. There are actually 3 objects in the sketch now - the line and two of its vertices.

If user fixes the stand-alone line, the sketch still has 2 DOF. But the DOF is not on the line, but its vertices. This means that user cannot remove the DOF by adding constraints to line (like angle or parallel constraint - for example). The DOF can only be added by adding constraint/dimension to the end point.

The Sketch Relations Browser only reports the line object excluding the vertices. It excludes listing of vertices under the line, as it would have made the browser over complicated. Instead, NX will show DOF arrows and the color when the Sketch Relations dialog is up, and Display DOF setting is ON. If the color of the vertices displays as Partially Constrained Curves color, then it still has some DOF.
