When I create an Inter-part Copy in a part from a face or body of the assembly when I return to the assembly I cannot see the geometry that I have copied.  However if I break the link in the part, then I can see it in the assembly. Why is this?

Solution

This is working as designed. When you create an Inter-part copy, faces, features, and entire parts can be associatively copied into another part document as construction geometry to allow you to use this to create further features. As it is construction geometry that is why it is only visible when you are edited into the part and not at assembly level.  If you dettach it then it is no longer associative construction geometry and therefore visible in the assembly.
