An assembly component cannot be made visible by toggling on in the assembly navigator.
Solution
In this case, the user had hidden the solid bodies rather than the component part. Normally, without a filter selected, just picking 'Hide' and picking the geometry on the screen should hide the component part. For some reason, the user had hidden the solid body within the component part
'
menu - edit - show & hide - Invert shown & hidden' (or Ctrl+Shift+B) This displays the hidden solid bodies - which can then be made visible.
