How to setup a restart analysis in SOL106 with thermal loads?

Summary

This article provides a workaround to restarting an analysis in SOL106 with thermal loads and avoid the fatal error "USER FATAL MESSAGE 9155 (GETLOOP)"

Details

There is a limitation in SOL106 when attempting to restart a solution that includes thermal loads. Specifically, if the initial or restart solution has thermal loads applied, the software may trigger a user fatal error, as seen below:

^^^ USER   FATAL   MESSAGE 9155 (GETLOOP)

^^^ PARAM, LOOPID,         20 DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO A VALID LOOP IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.

The workaround to this is to copy the thermal loads in both initial and restart solution files. Here are some scenarios involving a fixed beam with applied loads.

The initial solution has 2 subcases

The restart solution has subcase 3 with loads added, and no loads in subcase 1 and 2.

Scenario 1: Mechanical Load in Restart Analysis

  • Initial_model.dat: Contains two subcases with both mechanical and thermal loads
    • Subcase 1: mechanical load(1)
    • Subcase 2: mechanical load(2) + temperature load(1)

Scenario 2: Additional Thermal Loads in Restart Analysis

  • Initial_model.dat: Contains two subcases with both mechanical and thermal loads
    • Subcase 1: mechanical load(1)
    • Subcase 2: mechanical load(1) + temperature load(1)
    • Important: copy temperature load(2) into the DAT file

  • Restart_model.dat: Add SUBCASE 3
    • Add Subcase 3: temperature load(2) is applied
    • Include the necessary restart parameters and run the solution

Scenario 3: Combined Thermal and Mechanical Loads in Restart Analysis

  • Initial_model.dat: Contains two subcases with both mechanical and thermal loads
    • Subcase 1: mechanical load(1)
    • Subcase 2: mechanical load(1) + temperature load(1)
    • Important: copy temperature load(2) into the DAT file

  • Restart_model.dat:
    • Add Subcase 3: mechanical load(2) + temperature load(2) is applied
    • Include the necessary restart parameters and run the solution
