This article shows the difference between Line Probe and Line Section and how they are useful to get desired results
In STAR-CCM+, we have 2 options to visualise data on a line.
Line Probe - If you go to Derived parts > Probe, you will see the Line Probe option.
The Line Probe gives you the option to create a line with equidistant points. For. e.g., you can create a line probe with 10 points or 20 points in a given direction. This feature is very useful when comparing with experimental data as you can create line probes and extract data from the same position as in the test section.
Line Section - Line section is available from Derived parts > Section > Line Section
The Line Section is a similar feature to line probe but instead of creating equidistant points, it creates points based on the background mesh. With a line section, you will get a lot more points compared to a line probe and because of this you will a more detailed distribution of the results.
As a example, I have shown 2 plots below - one created with Line Probe and the other with Line Section. The plots show Velocity in the X-direction.
The Line Probe plot gives the velocity at 20 equidistant points whereas the Line Section plot gives the velocity at every point from the background mesh. The finer the mesh, the more points it will display on the plot.
Depending on the needs of the analysis, you can choose either the probe or the section to create scenes and plots.
