Details

This tutorial shows how to perform a linear static analysis using 2D shell elements on a simple overhead crane in Simcenter 3D.
The aim is to introduce the user to important basic concepts and the analysis methodology within Simcenter 3D.
Before starting this tutorial, it is worthwhile reading the Simcenter 3D Basics article that explains the various files types used in Simcenter 3D and broadly outlines the analysis methodology.

This tutorial is divided into 4 parts as follows:
1. Geometry Preparation
2. Mesh
3. Apply Loads and Boundary condition
4. Solve and Postprocess

Part 2 - Mesh

Step - 17 - Create the Mesh:

Select the 2D Mesh  image.png    tool in the Mesh group of the Home tab tool ribbon
Ensure that Type is set to CQUAD4
Set Element Size to 20mm
Check the Attempt Multi-Block Decomposition and Attempt Free Mapped Meshing checkboxes under Advanced Parameters
Select all bodies in the display
Click OK

Step - 18 - Assign Materials and Properties

Expand the 2D Collectors item in the Simulation Navigator
Right click on the ThinShell(1) item and select Edit
In the Mesh Collector menu that appears, click on Edit
Click on the Choose Material     button for Material 1
Select Steel from the list that appears, click OK, then OK again and again
Right click on the 2d_mesh(1) item and select Edit Mesh Associated Data
Set Thickness Source to Midsurface
Click OK

Step - 19 -
Check That Thicknesses Have Been Assigned Properly
