Question:

I am using a Simcenter SCADAS XS to collect vibration time data on the internal MicroSD card.

How can the collected *.xtrp files be converted to a different file format?

Answer:

The Simcenter Recorder Data Conversion tool is designed for this purpose. It is installed with Simcenter Testlab or can be downloaded from the link provided. It is used to export SCADAS XS and SCADAS RS data to other file formats.

The supported file formats are: ASAM-ODS ATFX, Head, IST RigSys, Lexade, LMS ASCII, MATLAB, MOOG, MTS RPC III, nCode DAC, NI DIAdem DAT and TDM, NMEA and more...

No license is needed to run the Recorder Data Conversion tool.

  • Start Recorder Data Conversion ( Windows 10 : Start -> Simcenter Testlab 19.1 Tools-> Recorder Data Conversion )

  • Browse to the location of the xtrp files using the data selection tree on the left side of the screen. This may require that the files were moved from the internal media of the SCADAS onto the PC.

  • Note that multiple files can be selected for export, from the appropriate windows pane.  Use CONTROL key to select multiple individual files, or the SHIFT key to select two files and all that are listed in between.

Note the "Recorder data import" menu opens first, because the xtrp files are imported as LDSF files into the open project during the exporting process. Hence, after converting the files there is the option of saving the imported LDSF files in the open project using the "File" button in the upper left corner.

  • Next the “Export to..” window opens and you will have several important parameters to select before beginning the file conversion process.
  1. Export to: New file format type, selections include Universal (*.unv), SDF (*.dat), RPC III (*.rsp), ASCII, and more...
  2. Output directory: Files can be export to the original directory structure
  3. File naming: Note you can use the original file names or a custom prefix
  • Now press the “OK” button to being converting the files.

  • There are seventeen different file conversion formats (as of the 2019.1 Version):

  • MTS RPC III Additional Notes
Remote Parameter Control (RPC) files are commonly used to store data for durability test rigs.  The files are sequential, fixed length, 512-byte record files.  They have an ascii header while the data is stored in binary format. All channels in a RPC file must have the same sample rate.  An *.xtrp file from a SCADAS XS might have different sample rates on different channels.

Depending on the “mode” selection, either all the channels will be upsampled to the same rate (default) or separate files will be made for each sample rate found.
  • Universal File Additional Notes
Universal File (*.unv) formats were originally developed by the Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) in the late 1960s and early 1970s and are a common data interchange format between software packages.  The files were originally specified as ascii format, but later binary options were added.  The exported files will be ascii unless the “Use binary format for measurement” check box is turned on.
